Anuradhapura is located in the cultural triangle. It was the largest city of ancient Sri Lanka. The old city is on the Unesco World Heritage list.
Many kings and a few queens ruled the city for more than 1000 years from the 3rd century BC until the 11th century. In that time the magnificent palaces, sculptures and pleasure gardens and irrigation works were created.
In the centre of the city is the holy bodhi tree. Around it lived more than 7 thousand monks in monasteries.
In the 3 largest stupa’s / dagoba’s the holiest relics of Buddhism were kept.
